Typographic Capital Letters
Mugur Călinescu (May 28, 1965-February 13, 1985) was only 17 years old and a schoolboy at A.T Laurian high school in Botoșani when, in September 1981, he decided to write with chalk on the yard surrounding the House of Culture of Trade Unions and on the walls of some buildings in the city center inscriptions meant to provoke a reaction in people towards the flagrant breach all of the rights and freedoms of citizens and the disastrous situation of the economy of that era. In addition to documents written in the rigid language of the oppressive apparatus of that era (action plans, briefings, analysis, etc.) in the 200 pages of the dossier. 738 on the “Student” are held declarations of a young man who manages to remain faithful to his convictions despite the pressures of the Security and lack of solidarity from those around him. Typographic Capital is a collage of ready-made materials (documents and interviews), but the show is an exercise of imagination, a fiction which attempts to question the realities of these tracks in recent history and the way that they help us to understand the world where we live in today.
