Pina Bausch was born in 1940, in Solingen, Germany. As one of Kurt Jooß’s brilliant students, she got a scholarship at the Julliard School of Art in New York, where she studied dance. Back in Germany, she had gradually distanced herself from the traditional dance forms, and the permanent break happened with the show Le Sacre de Printemps. Pina’s productions at the Wuppertal Theater, which is now named after her, had stirred controversy for entire decades. Pina Bausch died unexpectedly in 2009.
